Origin of The Eclectus Parrots
It is believed that the E
clectus parrot originated from Solomon Islands and areas such as New Guinea as well as Sumba. They are also perceived to be natives of Maluku Islands which is commonly known as Moluccas and northeastern Australia. Some of the famous authors wrote that the European ornithologists who first studied eclectus parrots seemed to be distinct species. The parrots are very beneficial to native tribes that live in areas where they are found for instance, in New Guinea. Their feathers are used for decorations.
The Eclectus parrots usually establish their nests on emergent rainforest trees. Usually, the females protect their nesting site. The males are constantly in search for food to feed the females and their young ones in order to win their affections. These parrots are polygynandrous and this differs them from other parrots. Males can mate with different females and so do the females. This type of breeding is what brings about sexual dimorphism. Females are always advertising themselves in order for the males to see them and also to their rival females.
Females lay two white eggs which are 40.0×31.0 mm. The laid eggs are usually incubated for a period of 28 to 30 days. The parrots reach their sexual maturity after a period of two to three years. The females have a powerful maternal sense. This makes it easy for them to find nesting spaces and defend them against intruders. Interestingly, females which have poor nest hollows usually commit infanticide especially on males in case it hatches male as well as female chicks.
